All students at Elgin High School took part in a presentation put on by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol that showed the effects of roll over accidents, with and without the use of seatbelts.  Officer Chance Slater, along with a fellow officer, took some time out of their busy schedules to talk to all the Elgin High School student body.  Each grade level saw first-hand, the effects of roll over crashes through use of a roll over simulator.  Officer Slater emphasized the importance of wearing seatbelts to reduce the effects of these types of crashes.   He also reiterated that many accidents happen within a 2 mile radius of a driver’s house.

The car simulator consisted of a cabin of an S-10 pickup on a mechanism that allowed students to witness the actual “rolls” occurring.  Slater stressed that in a crash such as this, windows are customarily knocked out, and all occupants are customarily affected.  However, with the use of seatbelts, the likelihood of being thrown from the vehicle is reduced significantly.

Students were given the chance to ask questions and answer questions in the interactive demonstration.  Students were informed of the program, “Click It, or Ticket”, that occurs in May, where all law enforcement will be watching for law breakers.

In the afternoon, juniors and seniors were also shown a video that concentrated on the effects of rollover crashes.  This presentation was given in hopes of raising awareness of the dangers of reckless driving  throughout prom season.
